artists' statement
Our practice uses chance and intuition to create series of sequential images with film-based and digital technologies, using a variety of techniques to edit and manipulate the imagery. Process is important - the final form of the work develops organically through the creative and technical development of its making. The completed artworks may be exhibited as films, animation, indoor and outdoor projections, zoetrope strips, photographs or as installations.
As artists we are interested in the relationship between perception, experience, and memory. We are are fascinated by the mechanisms, both seen and unseen, by which we perceive and understand ourselves and the world: from the phenomenon of Persistence of Vision and the moment at which a sequence of still images becomes an illusion of movement, to the construction of internal worlds. We are particularly interested in exploring the relationship between external and internal worlds, the interaction of physical and psychological space.
Our sound compositions are intended both as creative pieces in their own right and as part of a wider audiovisual experience for people to walk through, as in an exhibition or gallery space, or for presentation in public places.
We like to explore the potential in everyday objects and sounds, capturing natural sounds from location recording, then digitally editing and sculpting them to create emotional resonance and a sense of place.
In recent years we have sought to take our art out of the gallery and arts cinema. In order to bring our work to new audiences, we have premiered several of our latest works in public spaces, such as high street stores, clubs and bars.
We believe that art of quality should be accessible to the widest possible audience, and like to make our practice open to people through documentation of our process - for example, through publishing an online production diary of a project's progress from initial ideas to final presentation to an audience. We also give presentations about our work, run workshops, and collaborate with members of the public, communities, schools and colleges.
